the 2 started their console wars during their second generation of consoles where playstation were riding their high from the previous generation even allowing backwards compatability. xbox on the other hand had just started yet was still competing with playstation. But Xbox even with tier better hardware lost by 131 million units being sold making this a horrible loss for Xbox.
both of these consoles had their short coming as playstation 3 had a built in blu ray disc and was far more advanced yet the high selling point made it harder for the average consumer to buy it, xbox was doing great till players started getting whats named "the red ring of death" making many lose their consoles and making microsoft lose thousands to millions of dollars to try and fix this issue.
